I attended MACs tribute to Val Garland at Milk with my girlfriend the other day and it was definitely inspirational. I enjoy attending these events (not only for the wine and champagne) but because it keeps me motivated and reminds me that its okay to go out of the box and to keep exploring, because thats what artists do- whether you’re a fine artist, designer, etc.
Here’s an article from Allure by Sophia Panych that I thought summed up Ms. Val Garland well.
“M.A.C. Cosmetics recently honored one of its most acclaimed makeup artists, Val Garland, with a demonstration—by Garland herself—of her past work. I have had the honor of seeing Garland’s work up close backstage in Paris at shows like Giambattista Valli and Vivienne Westwood, and though I knew she was an awesome makeup artist, I didn’t realize just how awesome. While re-creating five of her favorite looks of all time, Garland entertained the audience with her raunchy sense of humor and hilarious stories, all the while wowing us with her ingenuity and creativity. So what I’m saying is, she’s not only great at what she does, she’s inspiring, too. Here’s why:
She’s resourceful. Garland has used a potato and pieces of cotton wool to apply blush. And at the demonstration, she glued down a model’s brows with Palmer’s Glue. Hand her anything at all and she’ll figure out a way to apply makeup with it. “Find a tool that works for you,” she said. “Then just practice, practice.”
She’s a rule breaker. She drew all over a model’s face with navy blue eyeliner pencil for a fashion story in London’s The Sunday Times. At a Vivienne Westwood show, she once covered the models’ faces with clear gloss and had them shove their faces into a box of glitter. “Who knew something so simple could be impactful?” she laughed.
She’s fearless. For British designer Mary Katrantzou’s first runway show, Garland changed the look the day of the show. Backstage. Without telling Katrantzou. “I just felt what we had done wasn’t working, so I went around with each makeup artist on my team and created an individualized eyeliner look for each model,” Garland recalled. “Mary didn’t know until the run-through, and while she was nervous, she ended up really liking it. We’ve worked together ever since.”
She’s worked with Lady Gaga. Remember when Gaga all of a sudden sprouted alien cheek bones on her Born This Way album? Yup, that was Garland’s idea. “At that time, Gaga was wearing red lipstick and about six pairs of false lashes,” Garland recalled. “We wanted to do something completely different. So I said, ‘How about we do prosthetics?’ Then I took pieces of paper, folded them up into little paper airplanes and placed them on Gaga’s face. She liked the idea, so we took pictures and sent them to a prosthetics studio.”
She uses great products. When asked what her three favorite M.A.C. products were, she replied: “Creme Liner, Mineralize Foundation, and for sure, Ruby Woo lipstick.” ”
